About

AIGA 101

AIGA has a long, storied history, beginning with its creation in 1914. Over its many decades of existence, AIGA has seen professional design evolve from its earliest roots in graphic arts to an amazingly diverse selection of more specialized practices.

Because this “American Institute of Graphic Arts” expanded into so many different directions, the AIGA community lobbied to rehash its identity – not so much an entirely new identity, but moreso one that would enable AIGA members to approach external audiences about their roles as designers and about the value of great design. In an effort to fufill these needs, the AIGA board and chapter leadership modified the AIGA brand to better reflect AIGA, its members, and the organization’s interests; hence, the name and new tagline:

AIGA, the professional association for design

AIGA is, was and always will be the “American Institute of Graphic Arts.” With this new contemporary name and tagline, the rich legacy of graphic arts and contributions of designers for which AIGA is best known is preserved. At the same time, AIGA allows a broader spectrum of design professionals to better explain their affiliation. With this shift more towards design in general, the role of design in culture, civic society and business will achieve more significant recognition as AIGA continues to reach out to a greater audience.

AIGA now represents more than 22,000 designers through national activities and local programs developed by 66 chapters and 240 student groups.

AIGA Jacksonville

AIGA Jacksonville was founded in January 1989. At the time, twenty people signed a petition to form a local AIGA chapter called “The North Florida Chapter of AIGA.” Twenty-one years later, AIGA Jacksonville boasts over 200 members – graphics designers, interactive designers, illustrators, copywriters, educators and design students, as well as professionals in related fields such as printing, prepress and photography – with goals of doubling membership within a few years as well as increasing activity and awareness. AIGA Jacksonville hosts a variety of programs throughout the year which emphasize both professional and educational development. Some events promote excellence in design, but all AIGA events offer both students and professionals a prime opportunity to network. Ultimately, AIGA Jacksonville strives to position Jacksonville as a leader in the field of design.
