Be a Design Mentor!
What’s it all about?
The AIGA Discover Design high school mentoring program has been a huge success for our Jacksonville chapter. Students have found their voices, mentors have rediscovered their design roots and long-lasting mentor/mentee bonds have been formed. The results of the program have been better than we could have imagined; in our first three years we have tackled Get Out the Vote posters, the Jacksonville public library card initiative, and billboards addressing social issues. We have seen students who were curious about design truly blossom in their personal abilities and gain an understanding of the influence that design can have on a community.
We Need You.
We are currently looking for design professionals and college students in the Jacksonville community to mentor high school students for our fourth Discover Design group. The project we will be working on together is called School: By Design. Mentoring teams will examine school “ecosystems” from the student’s point-of-view, re-imagine a more sustainable school, and create an appropriate design solution. The program is developed by Design Ignites Change, a Worldstudio Foundation initiative that challenges students to use design thinking to explore and create solutions for pressing social problems.
The Schedule
The program is very structured, as we meet on Saturday mornings from 10:00 until 12:30 for a total of 8 sessions. We walk you through the steps of the project with your mentee, from concept, sketches, rough drafts and final project. You do not have to be an AIGA member to be a mentor.
The following dates are our mentoring sessions for 2011. You will need to be able to attend 6 out of 8 of the sessions to be a mentor: February 5, 12, 19, March 5, 12, 19, 26, and April 2.
