Be a Design Mentor

The AIGA Discover Design high school mentoring program has been a huge success for our Jacksonville chapter. Students have found their voices, mentors have rediscovered their design roots and long-lasting mentor/mentee bonds have been formed. The results of the program have been better than we could have imagined: first, with the Get Out the Vote posters and then with the Jacksonville public library card initiative. We have seen students who were curious about design truly blossom in their personal abilities and gain an understanding of the influence that design can have on a community.

We are currently looking for design professionals in the Jacksonville community to mentor high school students for our third Discover Design group. The project we will be working on together is based on the Create! Don’t Hate! program developed by Design Ignites Change, (www.designigniteschange.org) a Worldstudio Foundation initiative that challenges students to use design thinking to explore and create solutions for pressing social problems.

The program is very structured, and has total of 6 sessions. We walk you through the steps of the project with your mentee, from concept, sketches, rough drafts and final project. You do not have to be an AIGA member to be a mentor.

Schedule:

  • Saturday, January 23, from 11 am to 1 pm at the Regency Branch Library
  • Monday, February 8, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Regency Branch Library
  • Saturday, February 20, from 11 am to 1 pm at the UNF computer room
  • Saturday, March 6, from 11 am to 1 pm at the UNF computer room
  • Saturday, March 20, from 11 am to 1 pm at the UNF computer room
  • Monday, April 5, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Regency Branch Library

You will need to be able to attend 5 out of 6 of the sessions to be a mentor.
