Have you ever borrowed an image unsure of its source? Did you know that almost all design resources are either officially copyrighted or could be? Have you borrowed a font from a friend and used it for a client project? So much for client service. Are torrent sites at the top of your bookmark list?

Designers are the creators of culture, and the quality and methods we use to create and craft communications solutions form the basis of great design. The resources we use—fonts, images and other reference materials—are valuable tools. It is in a designer’s best interest to understand and follow a general set of best practice guidelines. These standards protect our work, our clients and, most importantly, our careers and the practice of design. Join us for an evening of discussion and invaluable information as Frank J. Martinez, Esq., guides us through the world of choices we make when we apply the vast amount of tools available through the Internet and in the world around us to our creative work.

Frank J. Martinez, Esq., is the principal and founder of THE MARTINEZ GROUP, PLLC, a law firm in New York that specializes in matters related to design, software and the business of design and related creative endeavors. A graduate of Pratt Institute, Frank is a former artist, designer and small business owner. Prior to attending law school, Frank was the Director of Production at the New York offices of Landor Associates and The Schechter Group. After law school, Frank served for two years as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where among other responsibilities he examined and issued patents related to objects of design.

In addition to his law practice, Frank is now Special Counsel to the AIGA and has for the past 11 years taught Intellectual Property Law in the MFA Designer as Author Program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Frank frequently counsels designers and artists on matters related to creativity, design, intellectual property and business affairs. Frank is an active litigator, frequently appearing in Federal District Courts to defend his clients’ creative rights.

Please bring your laptop, iPad, or any other type of web-searching device, as we will be exploring the web with Frank to find resources we are able to use within our designs.
